Which
Quincunx Should I Buy?
Our
various models have evolved over the years from the
original Model WD-4 to the current Model WD-7
Quincunx. About 95% of all quincunx sales now are
the Model WD-7 because it not only incorporates the
three gates so you can view multiple distributions
at one time, but it also has the adjustable pin
block which makes four different
distributions.
The
different distributions allows you to demonstrate
variability reduction, a critical aspect to process
improvement.
Where
did the name Lightning Calculator come from?
The
original quincunx was invented by Galton in 1873. When the Model WD-4 Quincunx was first
invented for industrial use electronic calculators
had not been invented yet. There were
however large mechanical calculators being used in
industry at the time called "Lightning
Calculators".
Well
you guessed it, it was named after this calculator
because it could quickly demonstrate concepts. We
occasionally get questions from antique dealers who
find these devices to ask if there is any connection
with our company. The only connection is that the
original inventor copied the name. Since the name
has been associated with quincunx boards over the
years we still call ourselves "Lightning
Calculator".
